Parker Dam, Southern California

0010

The five-man unit dressed in dark camouflage, their faces painted black and automatic weapons strapped over their shoulders at the ready, crouched low in darkness behind the rock outcroppings.

The leader, forty-five year old Bert Stein, was listening carefully to a report on a small radio from an a.m. station in Lake Havasu City to the north and across the Colorado River from their position. The standoff at the Fourth Empire was over. Two men had been captured. One dead. Plus the Phoenix banker was also found murdered.

Stein clicked off the radio and glanced around to the other four, their faces questioning what had disturbed him so much.

“What is it?” one of his men asked.

“The FBI and ATF have taken the compound,” Stein said reluctantly.

“It was inevitable.”

“True. But not so soon. We wanted to make sure everything was set here and at our other locations first.”

“But at least the Feds are out of our way,” the man said, trying to reassure his boss.

Stein ignored the man and rose to his feet. “Everybody ready?”

They all nodded.

“We’ve got to keep the water flowing no matter what happens. Everybody’s clear on that?”

Again nods.

“Then let’s do it.”

They all pulled down their night vision goggles and crept off toward the dam. Within a few minutes the dam was completely under their control.
